USCG Hollyhock hit by laker Mesabi Miner in ice convoy, Great Lakes

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Hollyhock was hit from behind by a laker Mesabi Miner on Jan 5 14 at around 10.45 a.m. in the Straits of Mackinac, reported Great Lakes and Seaway Shipping. The Hollyhock was breaking ice, cutting a line west, and hit a hard spot in the ice. Mesabi Miner was astern of the Hollyhock and hit the Hollyhock's stern. Hollyhock sustained significant damage to its stern and fantail. The Mesabi Miner sustained damage to its bow.
8:30 p.m. update - As the Hollyhock limps home behind the Biscayne Bay, the USCG Mobile Bay arrived at the site of the collision earlier today, freeing the Mesabi Miner with assistance from the USCG Katmai Bay.
