11 foreign sailors kidnapped in 10 days period, Nigeria

Feb. 20, 2013 at 07:22 by Mikhail Voytenko in Maritime Security

It became known during last 24 hours, that among 6 sailors kidnapped from offshore supply tug Armada Tuah 101, are 1 Russia, 3 Ukrainians and 2 Indians. In total during last 10 days Nigerian pirates kidnapped 1 Honduras nationality, 2 Indians, 1 Romanian, 3 Russians and 4 Ukrainians. During Feb 17-18 Nigerian attacked practically in one position two fishing vessels, the last one was attacked at around 08:30 LT Feb 18, VHF radio calls for help were intercepted by nearby vessels. No details are available on fishing vessels, there’s a strong probability, that the vessels were hijacked to be used as mother ships.

Meanwhile, Nigerian authorities are fighting off not pirates, but those who were called to protect shipping from pirates, namely Moran Security Group, whose vessel Myre Seadiver is still under arrest, and 15 crew are in jail waiting for “trial”. They’re accused of illegally transporting arms to Nigeria, which is what it is – absolute bullshit. I have copies of all customs and other papers, unequivocally proving, that the arms were declared well in advance and in full compliance with Nigerian laws and regulations. Nigerian authorities didn’t hold anything against the vessel, which was anchored on Lagos road, until Nigerian Navy meddled in, in order to get rid of a rival on a booming security market in Gulf of Guinea. The whole “case” is downright concoction, and puts the Nigerian authorities in line with Nigerian pirates. Nigerian prosecution is demanding life imprisonment for Myre Seadiver crew, no less. What’s going on in Gulf of Guinea and especially, in Nigeria, is a shame of everyone, from Nigeria to a so-called international community. It could be a shame to UN, too, if UN does have any shame at all, which regretfully, it doesn’t.
