Tanker GASCOGNE missed in Gulf of Guinea

Feb. 4, 2013 at 09:42 by Lars Brandstäter in Maritime Security

Oil tanker GASCOGNE has been missed in the Gulf of Guinea since Sunday. Authorities expect the Luxembourg-flagged vessel to be held hostage by pirates off Ivory Coast. A crew of 17 is reported to be on board.

The news follows recent incidents in the Gulf of Guinea, where pirates appear to be better equipped and operating with more brutality then their Somalian counterparts. See an article on GCaptain.com for a summary of the development and state of piracy in the region.
