STATENGRACHT collided in busy Kadet trench
Cargo ships STATENGRACHT and KATRE collided yesterday 12sm off Rügen island (Germany) right before the entrance to the busy Kadet trench TSS.
No persons were harmed, and it appears that no pollution has been caused.
STATENGRACHT is reported to have a leak in the first third of the hull below the waterline, but its own pumps suffice to keep the situation under control. STATENGRACHT has been escorted to port of Rostock, listing at 10 degrees. KATRE, with small damage at the bow, was able to proceed to the port of Sassnitz.
The incident happened in a region where, due to the extreme traffic density, the population's fear of a ship collision and its severe consequences for ecology and tourism, a most important economic factor, is expressed on a regular basis.
