Bulk carrier Orsula ran aground in the morning Dec 25 13 off Tibbets Point Lighthouse, northern Lake Ontario. Vessel is loaded with 21000 tons of wheat. It appears vessel can’t be refloated without lightering, cargo is to be partially or fully offloaded. The problem is, St. Lawrence Seaway is to be closed on Dec 30. Temperature was said to be 2C during weekend, but is to dip below freezing starting Dec 30. There are already delays in passing St. Lawrence river Seaway due to early ice, but authorities plan to get all the vessels through by midnight Dec 30, official closing date. Orsula offloading was to start on Dec 27, barges from Kingston, Ontario, were already contracted for the job.
According to USCG survey, most of the hull is resting aground, propeller is seriously damaged.
