Ferry Francis Gerena sank, 390 people on board rescued, Solomon Islands

Local ferry Francis Gerena sank ib the afternoon Dec 18 13 eight miles north of Anuha Island in Central Islands Province, Solomon Islands. There were 390 people on board, passengers and crew. Vessel was heavily overloaded, being licensed for carrying not more than 80 passengers, and started to sink after pump failed. All people were rescued. No injures reported. Investigation under way. Authorities said vessel was prohibited from leaving the port, but fled the port in the morning. No data found on the vessel.
