General cargo vessel Fri Wave grounded and refloated
General cargo vessel Fri Wave ran aground off Solvesborg, east of Kristianstad, Sweden, Baltic sea, at 0400 LT Nov 25 13. vessel was en route from Dunkerque to Solvesborg with cargo of limestone. Ballast tank was breached. Coast Guard tested master and chief officer on alcohol, test was positive, both were taken to custody, but master later has been released and returned on board of the vessel. Some or all of fuel on board was pumped out, vessel was refloated in the morning Nov 26 by two tugs and taken to Solvesborg, no leak reported. Both officers couldn’t be charged with drunken driving because they said they drank some alcohol after grounding. Still, both were fired, regretfully, by the manager of the vessel. “Regretfully” – because sailors are humans, because working on coastal freighters is one of the hardest in shipping, and because owners should defend their seamen, not betray them.
