Ro-ro Fernanda fire, Iceland
Ro-ro Fernanda issued distress call in the afternoon Oct 30 13 reporting fire on board and requesting assistance, in the vicinity of Vestmannaeyjar island, south of Iceland. Fire started in engine room and spread further in superstructure. 11 crew was evacuated by Icelandic Coast Guard helicopter, no injures reported. CG salvage vessel Thor reached the site and commenced firefighting. As of afternoon Oct 31 Thor was in Heimaey harbor, Vestmannaeyjar island. Reportedly fire was put under control, and vessel could be towed to safety after assessment of her condition and possible risks. Photos by Icelandic Coast Guard.
