Two freighters grounded by Typhoon Wipha, Kuril Islands

Two general cargo vessels ran aground on Kuril Islands early Oct 17 13, during typhoon Wipha passage, reported Russian media citing MRCC Sakhalin.

Freighter Livadia was ballasting from Petropavlovsk-K to Vladivostok, and most probably, approached Iturup Island, trying to shelter from typhoon Wipha, which hit the area on Oct 16-17. Vessel ran aground in Dobroye Nachalo Bay, southeast coast of Iturup. Vessel is high and dry on the coast, no danger to the crew which remains on board waiting for salvage tug Svetlomor-3 (IMO 8606484), ETA 18.10.13.

Freighter Varandey was intentionally grounded on a sand shallow somewhere along the coast of Paramushir island, details unknown. Reportedly, no danger to the crew or the vessel. Last known AIS position is dated Oct 15, vessel was anchored off S-Kurilsk town, Paramushir.
