USS Harry L. Martin hit Mathew Bridge, Jacksonville, Fla. Bridge severely damaged.

Navy cargo ship USS 1st Lt. Harry L. Martin struck Mathew Bridge central spin on the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, Fla., at around 1400 LT Sep 26 13. A tug was towing the USNS 1st Lt. Harry L. Martin when the ship struck the bridge near the center span, reported USCG. Mathews Bridge connects downtown Jacksonville to the Arlington area. The Mathews Bridge will be shut down until Sep 30 at the earliest. Damage to the center span was clearly visible. Officials call it a "significant hit." A Transportation Department spokesman said he could not recall an accident this severe in recent memory.
