How does ITF mar and harass ship owners – Lia M Quebec detention
ITF claimed one more victory over a bad ship owner, who’s massively abusing the rights of the seamen:
Canada has become the second country to detain a vessel under the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) for lack of employment contracts.
According to the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) the Lia M was detained by the Canadian authorities.
The ITF said crew complaints included, “Unpaid wages, a ‘collective bargaining agreement’ that lacked the vessel name, a date or a wage scale; crew with no money, no shampoo, toothpaste or other items; a crew member who had twice been refused access to a doctor; and crew members having been forced to sign blank contracts.”
There is another side of the story, though. Several days before vessel was detained, a new theme appeared on one of the two most popular seafarers Russian-speaking Forums, devoted to the owner of Lia M. A seaman asked advice and opinion on a company he was going to join, the Transmed company – quite a regular theme on those two Forums, with a lot of info on many ship owners and crewing companies.
He was answered by those who are working in Transmed, that the company owns at least 14 brand new bulk carriers, Chinese and Korean build, that the wages could be higher, but still, tolerable, and what’s most important, they’re paid in time without delays. Bonuses are paid, too. Officers are mostly Ukrainians and Russians, ratings are Filipino. Company, the Theme concluded, is not bad at all, 3+ at a 5-point scale.
It’s absolutely obvious, that the ITF is forcing Transmed into signing an agreement with ITF, by harassing company’s vessels. ITF isn’t restricted with any decency or basic morals, telling downright lies. Industry media bluntly re-post ITF lies without any thought of their own. There’s nothing criminal in being criminal, if one’s big enough to afford it. ITF, backed by ILO, IMO and Round Table, is big.
Here’s the Transmed theme on a Forum: http://wap.odessacrewing.borda.ru/?1-23-0-00000108-000-0-0
It’s in Russian, but posts are short and not too complicated, easily translated via Google interpreter.
