General cargo vessel Kiani Satu refloated, SAR

General cargo vessel Kiani Satu was refloated on Aug 17 at 11:20 LT, reported SA Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa). During the week salvors moved vessel towards the sea, and managed to drag her off the sandbank in the morning Aug 17. Vessel is to be taken 10 miles off the shore and anchored, for survey and further salvage. There are 12 salvors on board, said Samsa.

German freighter Kiani Satu aground, crew evacuated, SAR

German general cargo vessel Kiani Satu issued emergency signal at around 0300 LT Aug 8 13 reporting risk of running aground in Walker Bay,130 nautical miles west of Port Elizabeth, 220 miles east of Cape Town, SAR. Later vessel ran aground in rough weather, reportedly after experiencing engine problem. Vessel dropped an anchor, but was dragged ashore by strong wind and waves. The tug which was sent to assist the vessel, wasn’t able to refloat Kiani Satu, mainly due to adverse weather conditions. The Captain of the vessel requested an evacuation, finding situation dangerous for the crew. Crew was airlifted by helicopters, at 1002 LT all 19 crew were safe on shore. The crew uncludes Ukrainian and Filipino nationalities. Vessel reportedly, was en route from Ho Chin Minh Vietnam, to Gabon, with cargo of rice. Famous salvage vessel Smit Amandla is to reach grounding site in the evening Aug 8, steaming from Cape Town.
