Silversea Appoints First Female Captain

Aug. 10, 2013 at 03:43 by Mikhail Voytenko in Container Shipping

Silversea Cruises has promoted Swiss-born Margrith Ettlin to Captain, making her the first female to captain a Silversea ship in the 20-year history of the company, and only one of a handful of female passenger ship captains around the world. Former Staff Captain Margrith Ettlin has been appointed as Silversea’s first female captain. Captain Ettlin assumed command of Silver Explorer in Reykjavik, Iceland. Captains normally trade off every two to three months, and Captain Ettlin will be in command of Silver Explorer until October.

Before joining Silversea as a Staff Captain in March of 2010, Captain Ettlin worked for Germany’s F. Laeisz shipping group, and was employed by Hapag-Lloyd for nine years as a Staff Captain on board their vessels.

Silver Explorer summers in the Arctic, winters in Antarctica, and explores Europe, Africa, North America, the Caribbean, and South America in the meantime.
