Taiwanese VLCC B Elephant hijacked by Egyptian Navy

July 15, 2013 at 14:34 by Mikhail Voytenko in Accidents

Taiwanese VLCC B Elephant was detained by Egyptian Navy for allegedly, damaging an underwater cable in Egypt waters off Alexandria on March 22 13. Navy and Telecom are seeking $40 million compensation from the ship owner, keeping meanwhile vessel and crew in detention. Initially there was 17 crew on board, recently 2 engineers were allowed to leave the vessel, the rest are still on board, among them 12 Indians. Compensation demanded by Egyptian Navy and Telecom is obviously too exorbitant to be taken seriously, it all looks like one more case of State-backed act of piracy.
