Dutch freighter Onego Trader cited after Carysfort incident
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation office reported the incident happened June 15 when FWC spotted a cargo vessel, Onego Trader, two miles from the Area to Be Avoided (ATBA) off the reef.
Tanker vessels and all ships greater than 164 feet (50 meters) in length are required to stay in deep water as they transit Florida Keys waters. The Onego Trader is a 433-foot ship, which was enroute from Lake Charles, LA to Norway. Vessel should have been at least four miles offshore from Carysfort Reef, according to the FWC, but was tracked only two miles from the protected area.
FWC issued the captain a federal citation for violating the ATBA, which can result in a civil penalty of up to $140,000.
