Laker Herbert C. Jackson hit the Jefferson Avenue Bridge, Detroit

Laker Herbert C. Jackson collided with Jefferson Avenue bridge, Detroit, Michigan, at around 02:00 May 12 13, wrote Great Lakes and Seaway Shipping. The Jackson was inbound with taconite for Severstal Steel about 2 a.m. when the incident happened. At 9 a.m. the Jackson remained east of the bridge with a 1-inch by 6-inch puncture in the hull above the waterline.

The bridge was lowered in front of the moving Jackson and is indefinitely closed to vehicle traffic, but must remain open to boat traffic. Officials report this is the first accident in the bridge's 91-year history. See photos at
