Reefer Frio Athens still a mystery

May 9, 2013 at 02:51 by Mikhail Voytenko in Maritime Security

Reefer Frio Athens is still in roughly the same position in the middle of Gulf of Guinea, either drifting or moving around, without any apparent reason or explanation. Crewing company which manned vessel informed Maritime Bulletin, that the vessel is maneuvering in accordance with operator’s orders, while operator is busy with providing safe passage to Port Harcourt. Maneuvering and drifting in piracy prone waters seems to be rather odd way of providing safety. Something obviously happened, but what it is, we don’t know. Vessel may be hijacked and still controlled by pirates, busy with either stealing the cargo or maybe even, demanding ransom for releasing vessel and crew. Maybe it’s something else. We just don’t know, and there is nobody to enlighten us on what happened to the vessel, and what’s going on in Gulf in general, what are the new piracy tendencies, and what are the new risks.
