Frio Athens still under pirates control. No contacts yet with City of Xiamen crew.

May 7, 2013 at 03:27 by Mikhail Voytenko in Maritime Security

What is happening to Frio Athens, and what happened to City of Xiamen?

Greek reefer Frio Athens seems to be still under pirates control. No news from anyone with regards to Frio Athens, except warning in Notices to Mariners to keep clear of the area of the hijack, without the details of the hijacked vessel.

According to discreet positions received via satellite AIS system, during most part of May 5 vessel was drifting, in the afternoon vessel started to move in northern direction at low speed. Maritime bulletin was informed by a reader that Frio Athens may be manned by Russian crew.

Boxship City of Xiamen also remains a mystery. Vessel left Malabo road  and was lost off Limbe, Cameroon, since May 5. Relatives still can’t contact the crew.

City of Xiamen was under pirates control unusually long time, some 24 hours. What happened on board of the vessel, what happened to crew and cargo, is unknown. Maybe operator of the vessel prohibited all the contacts fearing the details of the accident will become known?

What is happening to Frio Athens, and what happened to City of Xiamen? Nigerian pirates are not satisfied with plain robbery and kidnapping of the crews anymore, they want more, they want cargoes? Why do they stay on board for so long time? How safe are citadels, and what’s the condition of City of Xiamen crew, are they safe or were there injures, not to mention worse?
