Bulk carrier Antonis G. Pappadakis detained by insatiable US Coast Guard

Bulk carrier Antonis G. Pappadakis has docked at Portsmouth Marine Terminal in Portsmouth on April 30. 2013. Vessel was detained by the Coast Guard. A lawsuit filed in federal court by the owners of the ship are trying to get it freed. The Coast Guard alleges that some crew members violated environmental regulations and won't let the ship leave until its investigation is complete. The Coast Guard wants the ship to pay a $3 million “surety bond” before it can leave port. Vessel’s owner, Malta-based Angelex Ltd. says that’s “grossly disproportionate” and filed a federal lawsuit seeking a “reasonable bond.” “The Coast Guard’s demands are unreasonable, insatiable, arbitrary, and capricious,” Angelex says in its suit.
