Master of the Indian aframax Amba Bhakati faces 2 years imprisonment in Malaysia

Nov. 27, 2012 at 05:24 by Mikhail Voytenko in Accidents

Indian aframax Amba Bhakati was detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) on Nov 24 for the violation of the shipping rules, as tanker anchored not in the designated area in Tanjung Piai, Tanjung Pelepas. Tanker didn’t inform the authorities about her arrival, operator didn’t pay light dues required to get a permission to anchor, said to local media MMEA southern region operations director Maritime Captain Ibrahim Mohamed.  All the crew including the Captain detained for investigation, operator of the vessel and Master face a possible heavy fine of more than $30,000, Master may also be sentenced for a 2-years imprisonment, which is obviously an “overreaction”, caused by some other considerations except safety of the shipping.
